Prerequisite: Math 254 or equivalent. Verification of prerequisites is required.

A systematic development of numbers, polynomials and polynomial fractions. Applications to the solution of linear equations, graphing of and solutions for systems of linear equations, quadratic equations and an introduction to exponents and radicals.

Grading: This class is Letter Grade Only.

A: 90% - 100% B: 80% - 89.5% C: 70% - 79.5% D: 60% - 69.5%

To complete the class, you must:

1) Work through the computer modules Explain and Apply for each of the online Lessons. Note: you will receive a score for each of these, but these scores will not count towards your grade, and will not change if you work these sections again.

2) Do all the written homework assignments. Use the posted assignments, not the assignments within Academic Systems! Write the problems down and show your work! Homework is 5% of your grade.

3) Do the online quizzes (called Evaluates). You can take up to 2 versions of each quiz. Together, the quizzes are 5% of your grade.

4) Complete the various supplemental activities assigned on the course site. Together, these will be worth 5% of your grade.

5) Take the 4 written exams. The exams are closed book/closed notes. Each exam is worth 15% of your grade. (4 exams = 60%)

6) Take the written final exam, worth 25% of your grade. The final is cumulative.

Taking exams:

Online students will take the exams in the Math Learning Center (Room 1074). Bring your completed homework, a photo ID, a pencil, an eraser and a calculator. Each exam will be available for a period of one week.

Before you take each exam, you must turn in the homework for the material covered. You must also have completed the computer modules (Explain, Apply and Evaluate). You do not need to schedule an official exam time - just show up during regular hours (be sure to leave yourself enough time to take the exam - up to two hours for an exam, 3 hours for the final). Be aware that testing space is limited and may fill during peak hours.

Exams (except the final) may be reworked and resubmitted within two weeks of the date I notify you of your grade. You will receive up to one-half the points you missed. Work must be done on separate paper and must be neat and complete. The original exam must be handed in with the rework.

If you do not take an exam on or before the scheduled date you may take it late with a valid excuse. The option to rework the exam will be forfeit for late exams.

Please note that cheating is not tolerated. If a student is caught cheating on an exam, it will be marked 0. If caught a second time, the student will be dropped.

The course website for Fall 2004 will include an online forum designed for discussion of homework and other course related math questions. The MLC is also available for free drop-in tutoring. Groups as well as individuals welcome.
