Who?
The Bike Cooperative was initiated with funding from the Cabrillo College Student Senate. It is managed by volunteer members of the Bike Club. Additionally, we have benefitted from the assistance of the Bike Church on Pacific Avenue in Santa Cruz. We hope in the near future to forge relationships with local bike shops and other related businesses and associations.
What?
The Bike Cooperative provides benefits of bike tool access, mechanical training, work space and discounted parts to members. We do accept donations of parts and tools. We offer bikes for sale that have been donated or assembled from spare parts. We highly encourage students to become members because it supports our financial independence and self-sufficiency, and it’s a good cause! Membership is $20 per half-year (Fall/Winter and Spring/Summer). Nobody will be turned away for lack of funds.
Where?
We are located at the Aptos Campus of the Cabrillo College District at 6500 Soquel Drive, Aptos CA 95003. The temporary home of the Bike Coop is behind the second level of the new SAC East Building, next to the elevator shaft, room SAC K902. It is accessible from the stairs next to the new bookstore, or either of the elevators at ground level, as well as from the elevator in front of the cafeteria stairs.
When?
We are open for service beginning Fall Semester, 2008. Our hours, subject to availability of volunteers, are 2pm to 6pm, Monday through Thursday. Help us fulfill this commitment by joining the bike club and volunteering! Email us if you want to volunteer, or just show up during open hours. With more membership and volunteers we can expand our collective knowledge and our ability to provide service, becoming a pillar in the college and the community.
All meetings of the Bike Cooperative are held at the Co-op. Meetings during the Winter Session are at 3pm on Tuesdays. During the Fall Semester '09 meetings wil be held at 6pm on Mondays.
Why?
The mission of the Cabrillo College Bike Co-op is to provide students and the surrounding community with the tools, space, and education to use bicycles as a means of sustainable, low-cost transportation. We promote safe bicycling, greater bicycle use, hands-on learning opportunities, workshops and volunteer training. Our intent is to create a hub for sustainability and petroleum-free transportation at Cabrillo College.
How?
The Bike Cooperative is run by student volunteers, with the assistance of college faculty, staff and administrators. We also benefit from the support of local nonprofit organizations like the Bike Church and Ecology Action, other campus clubs, and businesses in the area that offer discounted or donated parts, supplies and services. Without the goodwill of all of these parties, this effort would not be possible. That’s why we call it a cooperative.
