Our Consultants

All of Cabrillo's Corporate Training Consultants have "Real World" experience. We are business professionals with backgrounds in instructional design and training. We use, experiential, hands-on instructional methods so our classes are interesting, applied and relevant.

claire laughlinClaire Laughlin is an independent consultant and trainer. She brings experience in management and a dedication to effective communication to her training. Claire has developed and taught courses at over 50 organizations and at six different colleges and universities. Claire was a founding member of the Public Dialogue Consortium, an international group of consultants working together to improve the quality of public discourse, and a five-year member of an interdisciplinary team that studied and made recommendations for improving teacher training and development.

Currently, Claire is the Director of Cabrillo’s Corporate Training program, and she consults with a wide variety of organizations in Santa Cruz County. Claire also coordinates the Santa Cruz County Health Careers Partnership, and is a board executive for KIDPOWER, TEENPOWER, FULLPOWER International.

michelle watersMichelle Waters infuses each training opportunity with expertise and enthusiasm. She has taught hundreds of clients how to work effectively in teams, prepare powerful presentations and deliver quality customer service. With an educational background in psychology and communication studies, she excels in providing participants real-life application of the skills she teaches. Michelle is also a published author who has appeared as a guest speaker on a nationally televised program and spoken on numerous radio shows. In addition to training for Cabrillo, she is an adjunct faculty member in Cabrillo’s Communication Studies department, where she specializes in designing online courses.

Jeniffer Turner DavisJennifer Turner-Davis,PCC, CPC, OTR/L specializes in facilitating professional development with an emphasis on enhancing the skills of leadership, communication, and self-awareness. Whether working with emerging leaders, seasoned professionals, or those who are seeking to uncover their strengths, Jennifer's pragmatic and respectful coaching style inspires her clients' insights and growth.

Integrating her backgrounds in neuroscience, occupational therapy, and coaching, Jennifer excels at facilitating brain-based adult learning and adaptation to change. Supported by a relationship of mutual trust, she works best with clients who are eager to leverage their strengths toward increasing their success. She has a particular passion for decreasing clients' sense of overwhelm through a combination of coaching methods and research-based stress reduction techniques.

Jennifer's clients include companies like Seagate Technology, State Farm Insurance, and Dignity Health (formerly Catholic Healthcare West). She also serves as an active member of the board of directors for the nonprofit organization Kidpower, Teenpower, Fullpower International. Currently, she is completing her Master of Science in the Neuroscience of Leadership at Middlesex University in London, England, which connects the latest findings in brain science research to leadership development and informs the ways organizational change leaders can improve their capacity to make effective decisions, solve complex problems, and facilitate lasting change.

Shannon ScharnbergShannon Scharnberg has a Master’s Degree in Education, a Doctoral Degree in Educational Leadership & Management (in progress) and a combined 15 years experience in the fields of: education, corporate training, organizational development, management, consulting, leadership development, process improvement and systems-thinking. Shannon comes well-prepared to assist organizations in developing a sustainable approach to education/training, change management and innovation. She has partnered with many organizations and teams, across a multitude of disciplines and industries, to help them reach their performance goals. 

Rae Ann IannielloRae Ann Ianniello is the Director of Business Development for Henderson Communication Consulting & Associates (HCCA) in Fremont, California. With over 20 years of business background, Rae Ann has experience as a Human Resources Manager, Program Manager, Consultant, and College Professor. She has provided professional and consulting services for numerous organizations including BART, Berg Electronics, Bio Rad, Comac, City of Fremont, City of Newark, Clorox, Lam Research, NUMMI, Orcon Corporation, and Ross Stores.

Rae Ann received a Masters degree in Communication from California State University, Hayward, as well as a Certificate in Human Resource Management. She holds lifetime teaching credentials in both Language Arts and Office Technology. A dynamic, hands-on instructor, Rae Ann has developed and presented workshops in the areas of Communication, Business Writing, Business Strategy, Human Resources, and Organizational Development.

Janell PayneJanell Payne is an independent consultant in the field of Communication. She brings expertise in presentation and facilitation skills, conflict resolution, and performance to her training. Janell earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Communication Studies and worked for many years in hospitality, and then television, prior to attending graduate school. While earning her Master’s Degree with honors in Communication, Janell was selected as a Graduate Teaching Associate and began teaching at San Jose State University in 2006. Since then she has taught at six different colleges in the Bay Area and has been employed with both the De Anza/ Foothill College and West Valley/Mission College Districts since 2007. Some of her topics include: Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communication, Small Group Communication, Argument and Debate, and Facilitation.

In addition to teaching, Janell provides one-on-one coaching to clients who want to improve their presentation skills in the contexts of giving public presentations or communicating effectively during the interview process. Janell has worked as an independent contractor for Bold Echo, providing presentation skills training for start-up companies and high tech industry leaders, and currently works as an independent contractor for Power Speaking Inc., an internationally known high impact presentation skills training company serving a wide variety of clientele throughout the Bay Area and abroad.

Shawn SpanoShawn Spano, Ph.D. Shawn Spano, Ph.D. is a Professor in the Communication Studies Department at San José State University. He teaches courses and conducts research in dialogue facilitation, interpersonal communication and communication education. In addition to his faculty position, Shawn is a Communication Consultant and founding member of the Public Dialogue Consortium, www.publicdialogue.org, a non-profit group devoted to improving the quality of communication in public organizations and local communities. He has 13 years of experience working with city government and public organizations, including multi-year projects with two different municipalities. Shawn is a specialist in designing and facilitating meetings, training workshops, public forums, and off-site retreats with leaders, executive staff, elected officials, middle managers, commissions and boards, and local residents.

Hilda SendykHilda Sendyk is an independent training consultant, public speaking coach, and technical writer. She has trained all levels of employees for major global and local corporations, government agencies, and universities on both the West and East coasts.

She was one of the first Microsoft certified trainers, was active in the early personal computer industry as an Operations Manager, and has a Master’s Degree in the Biological Sciences. She has a mastery of MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and desktop publishing applications and the manner in which these applications are most effectively utilized. Hilda has also created and delivered Train-the-Trainer programs for training companies and corporations.

Hilda is an antiques collector, has taught dancing, and is currently writing a book on early California.

Karen CalagnoKaren Calcagno CPCC, is President and CEO of Raintree Enterprises, Inc., a closely held corporation with three divisions: Classic Auto Restoration & Auto Dealership, Commercial Real Estate Development and Advantage Coaching—coaching for business owners.

Karen has been an interactive workshop presenter for ten years. She is the head of SCORE for Santa Cruz County. Karen and her husband Joe, have been a serial entrepreneur team, starting, growing, then spinning off several businesses for the past 40 years.

With over 3,000 employees in her career, Karen as servant leader has honed her specialty in manpower and systems development. She now coaches other business owners in cultivating a workplace that calls the whole person to creatively participate while producing a profit.

Bonita Sebastian Patricia Renire has been a communications trainer for the past ten years. She specializes in business writing, effective presentations, group management, team building, and leadership consulting. She has designed professional development programs for high technology, professional service, and manufacturing companies in California and in Japan.

Prior to working in private industry, Patricia taught English at the college level in Monterey County and San Francisco. She has a background in language and cultural communication and spent five years working and living in Japan. Patricia values her experience in Asia and other countries and brings a global perspective and understanding to her work.

She holds a masters degree in English with a specialty in teaching English to second or foreign language learners and intercultural communication. She earned an Adult Teaching Credential as well as a Certificate in Business Administration, Human Resources.
