Demonstrate and apply the fundamental computer skills necessary for success when taking Internet-based online courses at Cabrillo College. |
Objectives |
1. Demonstrate proficiency in logging onto the computer and using basic computer functions including the keyboard, mouse, secondary storage devices, display and peripherals.
2. Create and save a Word document.
3. Upload and download files to an instructor folder.
4. Create an e-mail account and successfully attach and detach files to an e-mail message.
5. Self-assess readiness for online coursework.
6. Identify useful Cabrillo websites related to online courses.
7. Use a course management system to complete an online assignment and quiz. |
Content |
1. Basic computer function and components.
2. Simple file management of files and folders, including network folders.
3. Creating and saving a Word document.
4. Basic Internet skills including using a search engine and uploading and downloading documents from faculty folders.
5. Basic e-mail and e-mail attachments.
6. Accessing Cabrillo websites related to online courses.
7. Basics of using online course management systems such as WebCT.
8. Accessing related online materials such as from publishers' websites.
9. How to participate in online forums or discussion groups.
10. Simple time management for success in online courses. |
Assignments |
In-class assignnments:
Online tutorials, quizzes using an online course management system.
Workbook tutorials using the operating system, Word, and the Internet.
Research assignments using Internet search engines.
Class performances.
Out-of-class assignments:
Workbook projects.
Online tutorials and quizzes.
E-mail and file attachment project.
Research projects related to online coursework.
Students are expected to spend .5 hours in class and 1 hours outside of class. |
