Bay Walk: Circumambulating the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary

You’ve always wanted to walk around Monterey Bay on the beach, but you’ve just never gotten around to it. This is your chance to actually do it and have all the logistics (how you get back, for example) taken care of. And to do it with a pair of informed experts who will help elevate the experience to more than just a long walk on the beach.

Blending the Cultural and Natural Histories - As we stride along the beach we will stop here and there to have the natural and cultural history of the bay brought to life with stories ranging from littoral drift and coastal erosion to the Chinese junks that sailed just off shore. Place names such as Aptos, Manresa and La Selva will gain new meaning as we see them from a different perspective, and we will explore and discuss the enormous efforts to armor and protect the coastal bluffs.

A Two-Part Adventure (with time for healing in between) – We have divided the walk into two almost equal parts with a week in between for the blisters and sunburn to heal.

Stage 1 – New Brighton State Beach to Moss Landing
Sunday, June 22
Depart from New Brighton State Beach at 8:00 am
Target Return Time – 6:00 pm
Distance: 14.75 miles

Following the propitious clockwise direction, on the first day we will begin at the northwest end of the beach crescent and walk to its center. At Moss Landing we will reunited with our shuttle vehicles that will bring us back to New Brighton.

Stage 2 – Moss Landing to Monterey
Sunday, June 29
Depart from Cabrillo College at 8:00 am for Moss Landing
Target Return Time – 6:00 pm
Distance: 16 miles

We will resume our adventure on the south side of Moss Landing, and after gazing in wonder at the huge electric generating plant we will set off into some of the most lonely landscape in the region. Again we will be met by a support vehicle carrying lunches and ice cold liquid refreshments and you will learn new terms such as “rip rap” and “unexploded ordnance.” You will have a chance to see Mulligan’s Hill up close and personal as well as the last operating sand plant in the region. Finally we will walk into that persistent and predictable fog bank that envelopes Monterey and arriving at Municipal Wharf #2 where our shuttle vehicles will be waiting.

Note: Though we will make every effort to be back at our departure locations by the appointed times, we cannot guarantee it. You should not schedule anything for Sunday evening June 22 or June 29 as we might be delayed.

Physical Requirements:
Obviously, participants in these walks must be able to walk 15 miles over the span of 10 hours and maintain a reasonable pace. This is a HIKE, not a stroll.

Shuttle Vehicles and Drivers – We will need several group members who have larger vehicles (vans/SUVs, etc.) that seat at least 6 persons to help arrange the shuttle vehicles each day. Those who volunteer to do this must be willing to arise early in the morning to place vehicles at Moss Landing on June 22, and to drive over to Monterey the evening of June 28 to place vehicles in Monterey.

Those who volunteer to do this will be compensated with a discounted class fee. So, when you register for Bay Walk, please inform Cabrillo Extension that you are willing to help with the shuttles and how many passengers your vehicle will accommodate.

Note: Because of the nature of the material being presented, persons under the age of 18 may not register for the class.

The Instructors:
Gary Griggs is Professor of Earth Sciences and Director of the Marine Sciences Institute at the University of California, Santa Cruz where he has been a faculty member since 1968.

Sandy Lydon is Historian Emeritus at Cabrillo College where he has taught since 1968. Over the past 20 years the two have collaborated on walks and tours throughout the region and across the Pacific. Those who have experienced their tag-team integrated approach say that the “Gary and Sandy” show is not to be missed.

History

Bay Walk: Circumambulating the Monterey Bay Maine Sanctuary

Equipment/Clothing you should consider:

Comfortable Shoes
Layers
- goes without saying
Wide-brimmed hat - we might start out in fog, but later in the day, your right side will be in constant, bright sunlight--protect your face and neck
Sunscreen - goes without saying--bring some
Lunch - you won't need to carry it so treat yourself - ice chests are OK
Liquid and Snacks - bring lots of liquid and snacks to carry--the sun will dehydrate you
Binoculars - great for wtching sea life and other interesting stuff

A Note about Restrooms - There are several restroom stops available throughout day #1, provided by the beach parks we'll be passing through. However, day #2 has very few, so you'll need to be prepared to answer the call of nature in situ. (ie., bring some toilet paper on day #2)
