Workshops Designed For the Life-Long Learner
June 20-29, 2019

Cabrillo Extension and NextStage Productions, in collaboration with Cabrillo Theatre Arts Department and Cabrillo Stage, are proud to present this series of professionally taught classes designed for lifelong learners aged 50 and over in a safe and encouraging environment. Explore how the creative process promotes health, lifelong learning and a sense of empowerment through the performing arts.

Dance & Sing Broadway

For students who wish to develop Musical theater skills and “strut their stuff ” in a final performance.

Dance the Music of Broadway

Immerse yourself in the world of Broadway theater by learning steps and dance break combinations that make a musical come alive.

This class combines with Musical Theater Experience for an end of workshop performance (optional).

All skill levels welcome.

Jill Steel is co-owner of Synergy Dance Fitness Tai Chi in Aptos. She is a California native with extensive training in Jazz, Ballet, Ballroom and Latin Dance. An 8-year member of the San Francisco 49er's Goldrush Cheerleaders, she also served as line captain and choreographed for the team. She taught alongside pop star and professional dancer/choreographer Paula Abdul.

Musical Theater Adventure

Soar high with Cabrillo Stage alumni as you learn song and dance numbers from popular Broadway shows. This adventure will focus on the classic Broadway style of Rogers and Hammerstein and how it contrasts with present day blockbuster Broadway shows. This class combines with DANCE THE MUSIC OF BROADWAY for an end of workshop performance (optional).

Kathryn Adkins has 20 years experience teaching theater, voice and directing. She has performed in Europe and for diverse companies including Opera Theater of St. Louis, Cabrillo Music Festival, Santa Cruz Symphony, Tandy Beal and Co. and many musical theatre companies.

Read and Speak Theater - Acting with Your Voice

Enjoy the fun and fulfillment of performance, without the need to memorize! You’ll learn voice acting skills and then participate as a cast member in an ensemble presentation of a Readers’ Theater selection.

Rita Wadsworth, M. A. in Theatre Arts, has participated in Santa Cruz theater as an actress, playwright, teacher, director and producer and as a co-founder of Mountain Community Theater. She was Theater Arts Specialist at Gateway School and a SPECTRA artist throughout Santa Cruz County.

Show Choir with a Pop!

Put the “show” in your choir with great choral sound, “choral-ography” and FUN! Recreate the moves and sounds of the groups like the Temptations, the Supremes and the Marvelettes. All levels and abilities are welcome in this class.

Suzanne Duval, MFA, has over 20 years experience teaching voice in Santa Cruz. She has performed with Santa Cruz and Bay Area choirs, with Cabrillo Stage, Opera San Jose, and many other diverse musical ensembles. Her passion is using movement, imagery, and full body engagement to enhance healthy singing technique.

Truthful Living - Truthful Acting

If you’ve ever wanted to experience acting, or have acted before and want to dive back in, this fun and informative workshop is for you. Concerned about learning lines?  Don’t be! We’ll learn the basic steps of the acting process with minimal memorization. Explore and experience what it means to act, to live truthfully within the imaginary circumstances of a character, and give yourself the gift of stepping into someone else’s shoes.

Robin Aronson, Ph.D., actor and director, teaches theatre and acting at Cabrillo College and West Valley College. Robin marvels at theatre’s infinite permutations and life-enhancing powers, and revels in its endless, creative fun. She likes how theatre brings people together for the greater good.

Your Past - Now Present

Stan Grindstaff brings to Summer Performing Arts his magical system of personal storytelling. Life experience + first-person telling in the NOW + NO Script + NO Memorization + NO Rehearsal. Instead, script is replaced with visual and emotional recall, memory is replaced with reliving the scene and rehearsal is replaced by responding honestly to the relived episode. Share your own stories in a relaxed, playful, non-judgmental setting.

Stan Grindstaff returns with his magical approach to personal story. An international speaker trainer, Stan co-founded Lucid Storytelling, was a featured teller in The Santa Cruz Storytelling Festivals, and now brings story-based magic to youth in his Mr. G’s Magic Academy.
