The collaboration of Cabrillo Extension, Cabrillo College Theatre Arts Department, Cabrillo Stage and NextStage Productions offers a spectrum of professionally taught classes designed for life-long learners aged 50+. Set in a safe and encouraging environment, artists and student artists hone their skills while enjoying the companionship of others with a similar focus. Explore how the creative process promotes health, lifelong learning and an empowering sense of mastery in the theatrical disciplines you wish to study.

Musical Theater Adventure

Soar high with Cabrillo Stage alumni as you learn song and dance numbers from popular Broadway shows. This adventure travels from the classic style of Rodgers and Hammerstein to the frolicking folly of Jerry Herman.

Kathryn Adkins - has 20 years experience teaching theater, voice and directing. She has performed in Europe and for diverse companies including Opera Theater of St. Louis, Cabrillo Music Festival, Santa Cruz Symphony, Tandy Beal and Co. and many musical theatre companies.

Dance the Music of Broadway

Feel the rhythm, learn the steps and experience the combinations used in dance breaks of the great Broadway song and dance numbers. This class combines with Musical Theater Experience for an end of workshop performance (optional). All welcome!

Mindy Pedlar is passionate for music, theater and dance and has appeared in 50+ theatrical productions. She has performed with Juliette Prowse and the Serendipity Singers as well as Cabrillo Stage and many other theater groups. She choreographs musicals and variety shows and teaches adult ballet locally.

Script in Hand Theater

Let go of your interpretive skills without worrying about memorizing. This class will provide a safe environment for people to read plays aloud and practice "getting into character."

Robin Aronson, PhD, teaches in the Theatre Department at Cabrillo College, directs shows for local theatre companies, and performs with Theater of All Possibilities, acting with and for kids in school assembly shows around the Bay Area. Directing credits include: Black Snow, Eleonora Duse Dies in Pittsburgh, Arcadia. Robin is head over heels for theatre marvels at its infinite permutations and life-enhancing powers, and revels in its endless, creative fun.

Story Sizzle

This storytelling workshop includes no need for notes or memorization or rehearsal! You simply make a mental photo album and describe your experience in each 'picture'. Performance tricks of the trade will be shared to ensure ease, confidence and FUN.

She is an expert vocal pedagogue in the classical and musical theater singing styles and is a certified teacher of the Alexander Technique. Cinda currently teaches singing and Alexander Technique in Santa Cruz.

Richard Stockton is a comedian, storyteller and P.T. Barnum wanna-be! He says "I've pretty much been in the game since I was five. That is when, at a huge Thanksgiving feast of the larger Kern County Stockton Clan, I stood on the Thanksgiving table and did a prolonged impression of a dying turkey. I've been studying this craft ever since." He has appeared on dozens of national TV shows, performed in 1999 and 2000 as a sketch comedy player on Live From LA on BET. He’s headlined “A” List comedy clubs from coast to coast – Improv, Punchline, Comedy Underground, Comedy Works, and more.

Julie Oak has devoted her life to the marriage of movement and spoken word. Over 30 years of offering private classes, and guest teaching at colleges, festivals, and conferences, Julie developed “RealPlay.”  Through explorations, learning skills, and improv practice, RealPlay fosters playfulness, expressive power and human connection.

Poetry & Song: A Natural Connection

Do you write your dreams in rhythm, rhyme and melody? Perhaps you have written song lyrics. Think of some of Broadway’s favorite signature songs such as "Where is Love" or the jazz standard, "I Left My Heart In San Francisco." Come explore how emotions and personal experiences can be written as poetry or song lyrics of whimsy, praise, lament, and celebration!

Lisa Simon, MFA, is a writer, teacher, and singer who loves teaching poetry and fiction to writers of all ages. She is a frequent reader at Celebration of the Muse and her poems have appeared in Quarry West, Squaw Valley Poetry journal, and as the first prize winner in the Porter Gulch Review.

Explore the diverse stories and scores of this summer's festival line up at Shakespeare Santa Cruz, Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music and Cabrillo Stage. Enjoy guest speakers, presentations, discussions and view videos. The lively dialog and in depth experience will offer students the opportunity to enjoy the performances at this summers festival in a deeper and more enjoyable way than ever before. The content of each class is scheduled so students may attend the performances soon after the class meeting that covers each festival line up.

Phil Collins, MFA, is co-founder and Artistic Director of New Music Works in Santa Cruz and is a Cabrillo College Music instructor. He is also a composer, conductor, and performing musician. His orchestral and chamber works have been played throughout the U.S. and Canada. He has also composed and conducted for numerous theatre companies and colleges including, Shakespeare Santa Cruz, Western Stage, Mount Madonna Players, UC Santa Cruz, and Cabrillo.
