Supervisory Academy Training Series

Cabrillo Extension can create an account for your company that allows your employees to register for our classes pending your approval. With the company account we can then invoice you when your employees register for a Cabrillo Extension class. Supervisory Training Academy

Being a successful supervisor can be a challenge: You have a lot of responsibility, and usually, very little supervisory training. Designed to deliver results, The Cabrillo College Supervisory Academy is a 12-week program that helps you develop your skills and become a better supervisor. Choose which modules are best for you, or attend all 12!

Managing Performance

Tackling employee performance issues is an expected part of the supervisory role. Simply telling our employees what to do and how to do it often isn’t going to solve the problem! Many performance issues stem from poorly defined expectations and lack of coaching skill. Effective performance management starts with clear expectations, is reinforced through coaching and support- and is NOT deferred to an annual performance appraisal!

In this class you will:
  • Discern between performance management and performance appraisal.
  • Understand and practice the critical process of setting clear performance expectations.
  • Evaluate performance through the lens of a 4-part performance management model.
  • Practice coaching someone through a performance issue.

Setting Clear Goals and Performance Expectations
Reaching your goal is much faster when you know where you are going. Yet far too often, workplace goals are fuzzy and ill defined. Come to this course to:

  • Examine the goal setting process - what works and what doesn’t
  • Learn common metrics that contribute to annual goal setting
  • Review pitfalls in goal setting and learn how to avoid them.
  • Practice writing cascading goals that are appropriate for a business unit, department and you.
  • Learn and practice the SMART Goal format.

One of the primary responsibilities of a supervisor is to delegate effectively. To do so you need to match people to the appropriate responsibilities and set them up for success by providing the right amount of support.

  • Learn how effective delegation entails much more than merely pushing a task off of your plate and on to another’s
  • Identify tasks that you can safely delegate
  • Know what you should never delegate
  • Practice delegating effectively using a specific planning tool
  • Strategize follow-up that ensures tasks are completed appropriately, and that employees are learning the skills they need to succeed

Resolving Workplace Conflict
Conflict can’t be avoided, but it can be leveraged. In fact, handling conflict constructively can build trust in your relationships and increase your credibility. It can also stimulate new and better ideas and keep your workforce engaged. In this practice-based class you will:

  • Learn about the subtle ways that you may be creating more conflict than you need.
  • Identify signs that conflict that has gone too far
  • Practice asking powerful questions that get others “unstuck”
  • Practice coaching someone who is in a conflict at work

Leading Change
As a supervisor, you are called upon to lead your staff through change. Do you have the tools you need? Many leaders respond to this expectation by establishing overpowering rules and policies. Others disengage and become a victim of change, relinquishing their leadership potential. Instead of these two extremes, come to this class to develop the skills you need to provide effective guidance to your staff in times of change.
In this workshop, you will:

  • Understand the “people side” of change and how to ease the stress of change
  • Explore your role as a change leader, and the 3 components of effective change leadership
  • Build empathy for how your staff may feel when subjected to change
  • Learn a change formula that is critical for success
  • Practice coaching an employee through change
