Equity seeks to provide each student with the opportunities they need in order to be successful. We believe that diversity and difference are an incredibly valuable resource, and not an obstacle to learning. Instead of blaming students for lack of educational success, Equity recognizes that students can face many institutional and social barriers to their success, such as discrimination based on poverty, race, gender, disability, sexual orientation, language, nationality, and age.
For this reason, the Office of Equity examines how current institutional practices can be changed to better reach underserved student groups. Through programs, and providing resources and services, the Office of Equity furthers the Cabrillo College vision, which supports a climate of diversity and self-empowerment with a strong sense of social justice.
The Equity Library is a knowledge resource for students, staff, faculty, and members of management at Cabrillo who want to increase their understanding of institutional and social barriers to student success. The Equity Library contains books, articles, and DVDs that can help anyone on campus support the goal of better serving all students — particularly student populations who have been historically underrepresented in higher education.
