Structure and Governance

Membership: CHAC is open to all Cabrillo College faculty, staff, and students who are interested in Latino/a affairs on campus and in the greater community.

Meetings: Meetings are held once a month during the fall and spring semesters.

Leadership: Each year a convener and co-convener are selected. As a model of community based leadership, and to promote leadership development, selection criteria for the conveners includes the representation of both classified and certificated staff, as well as a gender balance. Terms of office are one year with the possibility of renewal.

Committees:  As throughout our history, CHAC members serve on college wide committees and report back to the membership during our monthly meetings. We have established the following standing committees within our organization:

1. Diversity: Members of the CHAC Diversity committee also serve on the college-wide diversity committee. The exact activities of the committee will vary according to the membership and the Cabrillo College environment. The concerns of this committee may include: new hires, the dissemination of Latino/a perspectives throughout department course offerings, the college campus infrastructure in relation to Spanish/English bilingualism, bilingualism in general throughout the campus, and other issues relevant to Latino/as at the college.

2. Information and Outreach: This committee develops and maintains a website, archives an active account of CHAC history, recruits membership, and advocates Latino/a issues and concerns to the college wide community through various venues, such as the website and college newspaper. New members may be recruited through a variety of methods, such as conducting email campaigns, membership drives, social activities, and other events. The committee also desires to increase our membership by emphasizing that CHAC is open to all who are interested in Latino/a affairs here on campus.

3. Community and Political Issues: This committee keeps our membership and the greater community aware of issues that affect Latino/as at all levels of the local, statewide, and national political arena, such as immigration reform, bilingualism, access to financial aid, etc. The committee will report to the membership and propose activities such as letter writing campaigns, letters to the editors on specific issues in various media publications, proposals to the Cabrillo College Board of Trustees, and other activities by which to take an official stance on local, statewide, and national issues relating to Latino/as.
