Christopher Reinoldson

Oleksii Chuiko

Second-year student Christopher Reinoldson has been busy during his time at Cabrillo College. Not only has he discovered his passion for engineering and pursued a challenging course load in the major—he’s the founder of Cabrillo’s very own Engineering Society as well.

Chris hasn’t always been as disciplined as he is now, but that just fuels his desire to dream big. Originally from Coos Bay, Oregon, Chris made the move to California to live with his dad and stepmother in Scotts Valley after high school, with the support of his mother and two sisters.

Upon moving to the Santa Cruz area, Chris got a job working in construction as a laborer and apprentice carpenter, where he learned skills that would engage his enthusiasm in building and creating things. After the job ended, Christopher was introduced to the Workforce Investment Act and learned that he would be able to attend school with this opportunity. He applied to Cabrillo College’s Fast Track to Work program and started the Engineering Technology certificate program, declaring his major as Architectural Engineering. During his time in the ETECH program he earned 5 different certificates and discovered his love of learning.

His love for engineering and the experiences provided to him by Cabrillo sparked his interest in helping others get involved. Taking a break from challenging himself with coursework, Christopher set out to start a movement. He founded an Engineering Society at Cabrillo in Fall 2013, hoping to help people move toward careers in the field. His idea for the Society stemmed from an idea to start a website that bridged all types of engineering majors to help them find a path to their calling. The “Career Path Bridge” would connect students with interest in all types of engineering majors to instructors and members of the community with experience and knowledge in all facets of careers that include engineering. Eventually, the goal is to create more paths to include all majors. Chris started the Engineering Society with this goal in mind, but it grew to include so many other things. The Engineering Society now aims to be a bridge to all the other engineering clubs on campus, including the Engineering Abroad Club and the Robotics Club, while also carving out a name for themselves.

Aside from Founding the Engineering Society, Chris is the Treasurer of the Engineering Abroad Club and is joining in the Student Senate as a Senator at Large. When not involved in the school politics, Chris can be found at MESA (Mathematics Engineering Science Achievement) located in the STEM center (Science Technology Engineering Mathematics).

While Christopher loves Cabrillo College and the supportive environment he found here, he has his heart set on transferring to California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo. Chris wants to be able to build actual real-life bridges when he is finished with school, which he predicts to be a long time from now.

The time spent here at Cabrillo has helped Chris develop a wide range of skills. He learned how to test his limits and not sell himself short. He learned that making the right connections can open doors for him and his peers. With the supportive faculty and staff here at Cabrillo, Chris was able to set himself up for success, learning how to help engage others and get them involved as well.

Chris's message to all current and prospective Cabrillo students:

"Network, get involved in groups, and utilize the campus resources. Inspiration can come at anytime if you channel it and exploit the convenience of our college, like the STEM Center, and if the dedication comes naturally and success is the nirvana."
