Curriculum

CAE’s vision is to:

  • Provide programs that commit to excellence in the field of Cyber Defense education at community and technical college and government training institutions.
  • Provide innovative, comprehensive and multidisciplinary education and training in the CD field.
  • Strengthen the cybersecurity workforce by providing CD education and training through degree and certification programs at community and technical colleges and government training centers.

  • Build an effective education pipeline model with K–12 schools to encourage students at an early age to enter CD fields of study. Provide the Nation with a pipeline of qualified students poised to become the future skilled technical workforce.
  • Continuously improve the quality of CD programs, curriculum, faculty, students and other institutions.


Cyber Security Skills Certificate

To achieve this vision, Cabrillo College CAE offers a Cyber Security Skills Certificate.

Students earn their certificate after completely the four courses listed below along with pre-requisites. Cabrillo College is working with National University and Western Governors University toward articulation --  creating the ability to transfer for a four-year degree.

  • CIS 75: Fundamentals of Computer Security
  • CIS 76: Introduction to Cybersecurity: Ethical Hacking
  • CIS 77: Computer Forensics Fundamentals
  • CIS 81: Computer Network Fundamentals

CIS 75: Fundamentals of Computer Security

Introduces fundamental principles and topics of Information Technology Security and Risk Management at the organizational level. Addresses hardware, software, processes, communications, applications, and policies and procedures with respect to organizational Cybersecurity and Risk Management. Helps prepare for the CompTIA Security+ certification exams.

CIS 76: Introduction to Cybersecurity: Ethical Hacking

Introduces the various methodologies for attacking a network. Covers network attack methodologies with the emphasis on student use of network attack techniques and tools, and appropriate defenses and countermeasures. Provides a hands-on practical approach to penetration testing measures and ethical hacking. Prepares students for EC-Council’s Certified Ethical Hacker Certification.

CIS 77: Computer Forensics Fundamentals

Introduces the methods used to properly conduct a computer forensics investigation beginning with a discussion of ethics, while mapping to the objectives of the International Association of Computer Investigative Specialists (IACIS) certification. Introduces computer forensics as a profession; the computer investigation process; understanding operating systems, boot processes and disk structures; data acquisition and analysis; technical writing; and familiar computer forensics tools

CIS 81: Computer Network Fundamentals

Covers the architecture, structure, functions, components, and models of the Internet and other computer networks. Introduces the principles and structure of IP (Internet Protocol) addressing and the fundamentals of Ethernet concepts, media, and operations to provide a foundation for further study of computer networks. Uses the OSI (Open Systems Interconnection), and TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) layered models to examine the nature and roles of protocols and services at the application, network, data link, and physical layers. Preparation for the CompTIA Network+ certification exam.
