Biotechnology

Courses and Certificates

Our program offers skills training essential for the field of biotech. The Skills Certificate and Certificate of Achievement provide students with the skills needed for today's in demand jobs.

What Can a Certificate Provide You?

  • If you're in high school, at a community college, or an allied health major, a skills certificate + internship can help you find temporary or entry-level jobs.

  • If you’re a biology major, skills and achievement certificates + internship + A.S. degree, can lead you toward your bachelor’s degree.

  • If you have a non-STEM bachelor’s degree, adding a skills certificate can lead to entry-level non-technical employment.

  • If you had a graduate degree, adding a skills certificate can lead to mid-upper level employment.

Courses

Start with Biotech Fundamentals (BIO-41T) and Advanced Biotech (BIO-42T) to learn more about the field of biotechnology and the fundamental skills required to obtain employment in biotechnology.

BIO-41T topics include careers in biotechnology, basic laboratory skills and equipment use, DNA isolation and manipulation, DNA technology, keeping a notebook, safety, scientific literacy, and report writing. Some exciting techniques explored are gel electrophoresis, polymerase chain reaction, gel chromatography, DNA transformation, DNA cloning as well as fundamental techniques like micropipetting, cell culture, and aseptic technique.

BIO-42T presents a deeper understanding of the field of biotechnology and strengthens skills required to obtain employment in biotechnology. Topics include DNA, RNA, and protein technologies, bioinformatics, plant and agricultural technologies, mammalian cell culture, medical biotechnology, and emerging biotechnologies. This is a follow-up course to Bio 41T. Some exciting techniques explored include CRISPR gene editing, ELISA antibody testing, protein analysis through electrophoresis screening, and Western Blot.

The prerequisites for BIO-41T are

BIO-4T (or equivalent course) must be completed prior to taking BIO-42T.

Certificate of Achievement

The Certificate of Achievement is similar to the Skills Certificate, but it is geared for students wishing to transfer. In addition to the proficiency gained from the Skills Certificate, students will acquire a deeper set of skills that are useful toward their future B.S. degree. Coursework is in both biology and chemistry.

After the prerequisites have been completed, a total of 23 units, taken over two years, are required for the Certificate of Achievement.

These courses should be taken in the following sequence:

  • Chem 1A, General Chemistry • 5 units

  • Bio 9A, Molecular, Cellular, and Animal Biology • 5 units

  • Bio 41T, Biotechnology Fundamentals • 4 units

  • Chem 1B General Chemistry II • 5 units

  • Bio 42T, Advanced Biotechnology • 4 units

  • Total of 23 Units
