General Education (GE)

General Education (GE) is more than a set of requirements, it's fun! The goal of the GE curriculum is to build an appreciation for lifelong learning and to deepen your understanding of your chosen discipline in context of our larger world. These courses strive to expand your knowledge for success in the 21st century; it's an opportunity for skill development through the study of subjects outside your major.

Be more than an expert in your field. Employers want graduates who have skills and some depth of knowledge in fields outside their discipline and are engaged global citizens who can lead, communicate, analyze problems, and propose solutions. Utilize your GE courses to learn the skills most desired by employers. Be the well-rounded employee who:

  • can think and write clearly, effectively, and critically, and who can creatively communicate with precision and clarity using web-based computer applications.

  • has a critical appreciation of the ways we gain knowledge and understanding of the universe, of society, and of ourselves with some understanding and experience in thinking systematically about moral and ethical problems in order to identify challenges and implement beneficial change.

  • has a broad knowledge of other cultures and other times, and is able to collaborate to make decisions based on reference to the wider world and the historical forces that have shaped it.

Starting in the 2025-2026 academic year, there are two (2) General Education patterns, choose one based on your educational goal. Each pattern lists categories of courses and the number of units required to fulfill your GE requirements. Take the courses suggested on your Program Map or choose courses that interest you.

  • Cal-GETC General Education Pattern (transfers to a UC or CSU). For students looking to tranfer to complete a BA/BS degree

  • Cabrillo College A.A. or A.S. General Education Pattern (fulfills local, non-transferable degree) for students completing a AA/AS degree at Cabrillo.

Tips on choosing a GE pattern:

  • The one you follow depends on your major, the specifics of your long-term career and educational goals and your transfer institution (for those going on to earn a bachelor's degree)

  • Picking the right pattern is an important decision that should be discussed with an Academic Counselor

ProTip: Students who are in the process of completing their degree requirements have the choice to follow one of the previous GE Patterns (known as "Catalog Rights") or use the new Cal-GETC standards. Please meet with an Academic Counselor to discuss your specific graduation and transfer goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

Beginning Fall 2025, Cabrillo College, and all other California Community Colleges, implemented a singular transfer general education (GE) pathway for students known as the California General Education Transfer Curriculum (Cal-GETC).

Good News for students! The Cal-GETC pattern will be recognized by both the California State University (CSU) and the University of California (UC) systems. This implementation is part of a statewide initiative within the California Community College (CCC) system in response to the Student Transfer Achievement Reform Act of 2021, Assembly Bill 928.

Yes, starting Fall 2025, only a student with catalog rights can utilize their CSU GE Breadth or IGETC pattern towards certificate and degree completion and/or towards GE certification for transfer.

Students who have not maintained continuous enrollment and have lost catalog rights must use the Cal-GETC pattern beginning Fall 2025.

Cal-GETC applies to:

  • New incoming students who begin their enrollment at Cabrillo College in Fall 2025 and thereafter.

  • Students with external credits from the University of California (UC), in-state private/independent universities, and out-of-state universities with no claim to Cabrillo College catalog rights.

  • Returning students who have not maintained continuous enrollment at Cabrillo College prior to Fall semester 2025 and have lost catalog rights.

No, the US History, Constitution, and American Ideals Requirement is not required for completion of Cal-GETC.

  • However, for students pursuing transfer to a CSU institution, an approved GE course focused on US History, Constitution, and American Ideals is a CSU graduation requirement.

The Language Other Than English (LOTE) requirement was previously part of the IGETC general education pattern. However, due to the realignment of general education requirements under AB 928, LOTE is now only a graduation requirement for the University of California (UC).

Students seeking UC transferability who have not fulfilled the LOTE requirement through high school coursework, an AP exam, or other UC-approved criteria may still meet this UC graduation requirement by enrolling in an approved Language Other Than English course.

  • No, courses for Cal-GETC must be passed with a minimum grade of “C,” where a “C” grade is defined as a 2.0 on a 4.0 grade point average (GPA) scale.

  • A “Credit” or “Pass” grade is acceptable, provided that it is equivalent to a grade of “C” or higher. A college transcript must reflect this policy.

  • The Golden 4 (Cal-GETC GE Areas 1A, 1B, 1C, and 2): should only be taken with a letter grade and should not be taken Pass/No Pass.

No, only a full certification of general education (GE) is available with Cal-GETC.

This is a change from how students could use the IGETC pattern, which offered partial certification, or the CSU GE Breadth pattern, which offered a partial certification.

General Education Worksheets can be found on the Cabrillo General Education website.

The Intersegmental Committee of the Academic Senates (ICAS) website has additional information about Cal-GETC.
