Degrees and Certificates

The Early Childhood Education program provides the course work required for the State of California, Department of Education, Child Development Permits. The course work is also appropriate for TK teachers who need to complete the required units. We also offer eight different Certificates of Achievement, two degrees (an Associate in Science and an Associate in Science - Transfer), two Certificates of Completion and one Skills Certificate. The AS-T degree transfers to four- year programs in Child Development, Human Development, or Early Childhood Education, with priority given to Cabrillo students at both San Jose State University (Child and Adolescent Development Department) and California State University Monterey Bay (Human Development Department).

Most of the 51 Early Childhood Education classes are held in the evening since many Early Childhood Education students work full time and many are raising young families themselves.

Early Childhood Education - Associate in Science

The Associate in Science in Early Childhood Education provides the course work required by the California Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing and Department of Education/Commission on Teacher Credentialing, Child Development Permit. It also provides a foundation for transfer to four-year programs in early childhood education, child development and human development. 60-62 units.

Early Childhood Education - Associate in Science for Transfer

The Associate in Science in Early Childhood Education for Transfer is intended for students who plan to complete a bachelor's degree in a similar major at a CSU campus. The degree provides a foundation for transfer to four-year programs in early childhood education, child development and human development. The program also provides the course work required by the California Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing and Department of Education/Commission on Teacher Credentialing, Child Development Permit. 60 units.

Certificates of Achievement

The Anti-Bias Curriculum Certificate of Achievement provides the early childhood education student with a course of study that explores the impact of societal influences on the development of children’s social identity including the implications of oppression and privilege for children, families, programs, classrooms, and teaching. Students completing this certificate will learn developmentally appropriate, inclusive and anti-bias/anti-racist/social justice approaches to support young children and the adults who care for them to embrace human diversity, recognize social bias, and take action on their own and others' behalf. 33.5 units.

The Children’s Literacy Curriculum Certificate of Achievement provides the early childhood education student with a course of study that explores the knowledge and skills needed to support young children’s language and emergent literacy development using developmentally appropriate materials and guidance principles, and integrating anti-bias/anti-racist/social justice and inclusive curriculum practices. 33.5 units.

The Curriculum Planning Certificate of Achievement provides the early childhood education student with a course of study that explores the knowledge and skills of how to develop curriculum and environments for young children based on developmentally appropriate principles from observations, documentation, and assessments of children and thoughtful integration of cultural and linguistic competency, inclusive teaching, and anti-bias/anti-racist/social justice principles. 33.5 units.

The Early Childhood Education Administration Certificate of Achievement provides the early childhood education student interested in assuming leadership and administrative positions with a course of study that prepares them for administrative positions in early childhood, school-age, and other community-based settings. Competencies required to lead and administer a variety of programs are included as well as introductory business and management strategies appropriate for leading programs serving children, youth, and their families. 46.5-49.5 units.

The Infant/Toddler Care Certificate of Achievement provides the early childhood education student with a course of study that explores the knowledge and skills necessary to provide high quality care and education for the youngest children, from early infancy through three years of age while integrating principles of respect, cultural and linguistic competency, inclusive teaching, and anti-bias/anti-racist/social justice principles. 33.5 units

With this certificate you will learn to create curriculum and environments that promote children's bilingual language development based on developmental principles, observations, documentation and assessments of children.

16.5-20.5 units

The Teaching Certificate of Achievement provides the early childhood education student with a course of study that satisfies multiple requirements and content needs including the core licensing requirements required by the California Department of Social Services, Community Care Licensing and Department of Education/Commission on Teacher Credentialing, Child Development Permit. Students interested in working as a classroom teacher in ECE, transitional kindergarten (TK), children’s center teacher, home-based early childhood educator and/or specialist in state-funded programs, or public or private settings will develop the foundational knowledge of how children learn and grow and what they need for optimal development. 38.5-40.5 units

The Working with Culturally Diverse Families Certificate of Achievement provides the early childhood education (ECE) student with a course of study that explores the knowledge and skills necessary to implement principles of cultural and linguistic competency, inclusive practices, and anti-bias education in teaching and caring for young children and working with their families. 33.5 units

Noncredit Certificates

Introduction to Child Development Certificate of Completion

The Introduction to Child Development Certificate of Completion is a non credit certificate designed to present the basic concepts of ages and stages, developmental theory, and child observation and analysis from birth to five years of age. Students will apply theory, concepts and terminology to observations, written documentation, and analysis of early childhood development. Prepares students for work in the field of early childhood education and credit bearing early childhood education courses that apply to the California Child Development Permit Matrix. May be offered in bilingual or a distance-learning format. 36 hours

Introduction to Infant/Toddler Development Certificate of Completion

The Introduction to Infant/Toddler Development Certificate of Completion is a non credit certificate designed to allow students to examine the cognitive, language, physical, and social/emotional development of infants and toddlers, how that development is supported through play and relationships and attachments with their family and caregivers. This certificate also examines responsive care practices for supporting infant and toddler development, how infants and toddlers construct knowledge, learn language and culture; and develop relationships, emotional self-regulation, and autonomy. 54-90 hours
