Chemical Safety
Cabrillo College is committed to ensuring a safe learning environment through comprehensive chemical safety practices. Understanding and respecting chemical hazards is crucial for students, faculty, and staff. Always read chemical labels and consult Safety Data Sheets (SDS) before use. Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) such as safety goggles, gloves, and lab coats, must be worn when handling chemicals. Safe handling procedures, including proper storage, adequate ventilation, and cautious transport, help minimize risks.
Part of this commitment includes development and implementation of a Hazard Communication (HazCom) Plan as well as a Chemical Hygiene Plan. Both set standards for use, labeling, and storage of chemicals on campus. The HazCom plan applies to the use of chemicals by all Cabrillo employees, except those who work in laboratories. Those employees are covered by the Chemical Hygiene Plan.
In the event of an emergency, remain calm and follow established protocols. For spills, exposure incidents, or fires, immediately alert others, evacuate if necessary, and contact campus security or emergency services. Cabrillo College also provides training sessions on hazard communication, chemical handling, and emergency response. By staying informed and following these guidelines, we can maintain a safe, healthy, and environmentally responsible campus community.
