The National Incident Management System (NIMS) is a systematic, proactive approach to guide departments and agencies at all levels of government, non-governmental organizations (NGO), and the private sector in working together seamlessly and managing incidents involving all threats and hazards—regardless of cause, size, location, or complexity—in order to reduce loss of life, loss of property, and harm to the environment.
The Emergency Management Institute (EMI), located at the National Emergency Training Center in Emmitsburg, MD, offers a broad range of NIMS-related training. Many of the trainings that are applicable to most positions and scenarios at Cabrillo can be taken online.
In order to take the online courses, you must obtain a FEMA Student Identification Number (FEMA SID). To get a FEMA SID, follow the directions on the FEMA EMI page.
The complete course list can be found on the FEMA EMI Course List Page. At a minimum, Cabrillo personnel should take:
- IS-100.HE: Introduction to the Incident Command System (ICS) for Higher Education
- IS-700.a: National Incident Managment Systems (NIMS) An Introduction
Additional courses may be recommended, depending on your position at Cabrillo or your role on the Incident Command Team, if you have one.
Please print out the certificate upon the completion of the course.
