MUS31A - Fundamental Recording Techniques I

  • 1.5 units; 1.5 hours Lecture, 1 hour Laboratory

  • Recommended Preparation: MUS 5 or MUS 6 or equivalent skills.

  • Repeatability: May be taken a total of 1 time.

MUS31A is an introduction to audio and recording. In this class students learn about audio theory, digital audio, signal flow, microphones, equalizers and editing and mixing in a DAW. (8 week course)

MUS 31B - Fundamental Recording Techniques II

  • 1.5 units; 1.5 hours Lecture, 1 hour Laboratory

  • Prerequisite: MUS 31A or equivalent experience.

  • Repeatability: May be taken a total of 1 time.

MUS31B is a continuation of MUS31A. In this class students learn about dynamic effects (compressors, limiters, gates), time-based effects (reverbs, delays), mastering, and more advanced routing, mixing and editing in a DAW. (8 week course)

MUS 31LS Live Sound Production

  • 1.5 units; 1.5 hours Lecture, 1 hour Laboratory

  • Prerequisite: MUS 31B or equivalent experience.

  • Repeatability: May be taken a total of 1 time.

MUS31LS explores all aspects of Live Sound. Students will study and learn techniques used to set up and successfully run and manage live sound reinforcement systems. (8 weeks course)

MUS 31SP Studio Production

  • 1.5 units; 1.5 hours Lecture, 1 hour Laboratory

  • Prerequisite: MUS 31B or equivalent experience.

  • Repeatability: May be taken a total of 1 time.

MUS31SP is our most advanced recording course, in which students utilize skills learned to fully produce musical projects including multi-track recording, editing, timing/pitch correction and mastering. (8 weeks course)

MUS 31V: Audio/Music for Visual Media

  • 1.5 Units

  • Recommended preparation: MUS-31A (Fundamental Recording Techniques I), MUS-57A (Digital Music Production and MIDI), and MUS-5 (Beginning Jazz/Pop Music Theory) or MUS-6 (Fundamentals of Music) - Recommended prior to taking this course, but is not required

MUS 31V Explores methods of creating sound and music for film, television, and visual media, including Foley, automated dialog replacement (ADR), sound effects, surround mixing, composing and scoring, and syncing to video. Job possibilities include audio editor, Foley artist, audio mixer, music editor, composer, and composer's assistant. May be offered in a distance-learning format.

MUS 57A Music and Computers I: Digital Music Production

  • 1.5 units; 1.5 hours Lecture, 1 hour Laboratory

  • Recommended Preparation: MUS 5 or MUS 6 or equivalent experience.

  • Repeatability: May be taken a total of 1 time.

MUS57A covers MIDI sequencing in a DAW, utilizing and programming virtual instruments and effects. Students will complete various music production projects in their DAW. (8 weeks course)

MUS 57B Music and Computers II: Electronic Music Composition

  • 1.5 units; 1.5 hours Lecture, 1 hour Laboratory

  • Prerequisite: MUS 57A or equivalent experience.

  • Repeatability: May be taken a total of 1 time.

In MUS57B students study styles of electronic music composition, sound design, synthesis, sampling techniques, and performance.

MUS 57NS Music and Computers III: Music Notation and Scoring

  • 1.5 units; 1.5 hours Lecture, 1 hour Laboratory

  • Prerequisite: MUS 57A or MUS 57B or equivalent experience.

  • Repeatability: May be taken a total of 1 time.

MUS57NS students learn to use software music notation, including entering notes, rhythms, articulations, dynamics, expressions, exporting parts and scores, drum notation, and editing playback styles and software instruments.

MUS 59A Game Audio I

  • 1.5 units

  • Recommended preparation: MUS-57A (Music Production I: Digital Music Production and MIDI) and MUS-31A (Fundamental Recording Techniques I) - Recommended prior to taking this course, but is not required.

MUS 59A Introduces techniques of audio production for video games, including creating sound effects, ambiences, and dialogue, and integrating these into a game engine using audio middleware. Students will build foundational skills in audio/sound design, technical sound design, and interactive mixing. May be offered in a distance-learning format.

MUS 59B Game Audio II

  • 1.5 units;

  • Prerequisite: MUS-59A or MUS-459A (Game Audio Production II) - Must be completed prior to taking this course.

MUS 59B Continues the study of audio production for video games, including creating adaptive music, exploring additional interactive mixing techniques, and integrating these into a game engine using audio middleware. Students will further their skills in audio/sound design, technical sound design, and music production. May be offered in a distance-learning format.

MUS 7 Music Synthesis, Sampling, and Electronic Music

  • 3 units; 3 hours Lecture, 1 hour Laboratory

  • Recommended Preparation: MUS 5 or MUS 6 or equivalent skills.

  • Repeatability: May be taken a total of 1 time.

MUS7 covers the use of synthesizers and digital sampling in the composition of electronic music. Topics include: analog synthesis, digital synthesis, digital sampling, sample editing, digital processing, MIDI and electronic music composition, including hands-on experience for individual projects.
